......Thomas looked through the window and saw Donna standing beside their daughter, lowering the drawbridge to the city. Beyond the gate waited the man who had once tried to attack him, surrounded by a group of thugs.Donna stared back at him as she lowered the bridge. Thomas could not understand why she was letting them in."Stop!" he shouted.He turned and ran toward the stairs, desperate to reach the gate before it was too late.Suddenly, he sat upright in bed, drenched in sweat.It was only three in the morning.Thomas rubbed his face and stared into the darkness of the room. The dream lingered with an unsettling clarity. He could still see Donna lowering the bridge and inviting danger inside.He thought about Donna.He had spent years trying to understand her.Even during their marriage, Donna had always seemed strangely controlled, as though every word and action had been carefully rehearsed. Most of the time she revealed very little of herself. Yet there were brief moments when her guard slipped. In those moments she would speak passionately about inequality, about people who had been born without opportunities and forced to live with choices they had never really made.Those rare glimpses made him believe there was more beneath the surface.Somewhere along the way, he had fallen deeply in love with her. She seemed genuinely kind, and there was little to no argument between them.He thought getting married would make a difference. He believed she would eventually open up to him and let him see the person she kept hidden from everyone else. Instead, she remained much the same.For a long time, he had hoped marriage would bring them closer. Yet she often appeared distant, lost in thought, as though part of her mind was occupied elsewhere. Despite everything, he missed her.He was grateful for the trust she had placed in him. Their daughter spent most of her time with him, and sometimes it felt as though Donna trusted him more than she trusted herself.The house always felt brighter when their daughter was there. Her laughter filled the rooms with life, and Thomas often found himself hurrying home just to spend time with her.Donna's visits were usually brief, but she never forgot to bring Medovik, the Russian honey cake she had learned to make from Daniel. Their daughter loved it, and Thomas had grown fond of it as well.He glanced toward the hallway.The dream had been the strangest he had ever had about Donna. Thomas rarely paid attention to dreams, but this one left him deeply uneasy.Unable to shake the feeling that it was a bad omen, he got out of bed and quietly walked to his daughter's room.
